മത്തണ്ട അപ്പച്ചു

ഒരു ഇന്ത്യൻ യോദ്ധാവും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമര സേനാനിയും ആയിരുന്നു മത്തണ്ട അപ്പച്ചു. ചിക്ക വീര രാജേന്ദ്രന്റെ സൈന്യത്തിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.^[1] കൊടകിലെ ബേപ്പുനാട്ടിലെ ബൊല്ലുമാട് ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള^[2] അദ്ദേഹം മാടന്ത അപ്പച്ചു എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.^[1]

1834-ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനി കൊടകിനെ (അന്ന് കൂർഗ് എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു) ആക്രമിച്ചു. 6000-ലധികം പേർ അടങ്ങുന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സൈന്യത്തെ നാല് നിരകളായി തിരിച്ച് വിവിധ ദിശകളിൽ നിന്ന് കുടകിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ചു.^[3]ഏപ്രിൽ മൂന്നാം തീയതി, നാല് നിരകളിൽ ഒന്ന് കൊഡ്‌ലിപേട്ട് വഴി കൊടകിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ച് ഹാരിങ്കിയിലേക്ക് മാർച്ച് ചെയ്തു. ഒരു മരക്കോട്ട കാവൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്കാണ് അവർ വന്നത്. ഈ ഗ്രാമം മാത്തണ്ട അപ്പച്ചുവിന്റെയും കൂട്ടരുടെയും കീഴിലായിരുന്നു. കോളത്തിന് മേജർ ബേർഡ് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. നാലര മണിക്കൂർ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ ഗ്രാമം കടന്നുപോകാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.^[1] ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ കനത്ത വെടിവെപ്പിന് വിധേയരായി. കേണൽ മിൽ, എൻസൈൻ റോബർട്ട്സൺ, എൻസൈൻ ബാബിംഗ്ടൺ എന്നിവരടക്കം 48 പേർ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സേനയിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. ആക്രമണ നിരയിൽ 118 പേർക്ക് പരിക്കേറ്റു.^[1] മത്തണ്ട അപ്പച്ചുവിന്റെ ഭാഗത്ത് നിന്ന് ആളപായമൊന്നും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. മേജർ ബേർഡ് തന്റെ ശേഷിക്കുന്ന ആളുകളെ നയിച്ചു, മറ്റൊരു വഴി പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനായി നിരവധി മൈലുകൾ വേഗത്തിൽ പിൻവാങ്ങി.^{[1][4][5][6][7][8][9]}

ചിക്ക വീര രാജേന്ദ്രന് വേണ്ടി രാജാവ്, ദിവാൻ ലക്ഷ്മിനാരായണ, മഹമ്മദ് ടേക്കർ ഖാൻ എന്നിവർ ഏപ്രിൽ 4-ന് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരുമായി സന്ധി ചെയ്തു. ഏപ്രിൽ 5-ന് ദിവാൻ ബോപ്പു കീഴടങ്ങി. ഏപ്രിൽ 6 ന് കേണൽ ഫ്രേസർ മടിക്കേരി കോട്ടയിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചു. ഏപ്രിൽ 10-ന് രാജാവും ഭാര്യമാരും നാലകനാട് കൊട്ടാരം വിട്ട് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർക്ക് കീഴടങ്ങാൻ മടിക്കേരിയിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു.^[10]
