ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഗണിത-ഭൗതിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനനും എഞ്ചിനീയറുമാണ്വില്യം തോംസൺOMGCVOPCPRSPRSE (/ˈkɛlvɪn/; 26 June 1824 – 17 December 1907). ബെൽഫസ്റ്റ്ല് 1824ലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. ഗ്ലാസ്ഗൊവ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ വൈദ്യുതിയിലെ ഗണിത വിശകലനവും ഒന്നും രണ്ടും തെർമ്മോഡൈനാമിക്സിലെ നിയമങ്ങൾ എന്നീ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കണ്ടുപിടിത്തങ്ങൾ നടത്തി. ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രത്തെ ആധുനികരീതിയിൽ വളർത്തുന്നതിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രധാന പങ്കുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തങ്ങളിൽ ഗണിതശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഹു ബ്ലാക്ക്ബൂൺ വളരെയധികം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക് ടെലെഗ്രാഫ് എഞ്ചീനീർ എന്ന നിലയിൽ പ്രശസ്തനാണ് വില്യം തോംസൺ. ട്രാൻസ്ലാന്റിക്ക് ടെലിഗ്രാഫ് പദ്ധതിയുടെ ബഹുമതിയായി വിക്ടോറിയ രാജ്ഞി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സർ പദവി നല്കി. അദ്ദേഹം കടൽ യാത്രകളോട് വളരെ ആഭിമുഖ്യം പുലർത്തിയിരുന്ന വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കണ്ടുപിടിത്തം നാവികരുടെ കോമ്പസാണ്[1]. അതിനു മുൻപ് ഉപയോഗത്തിലിരുന്നതിന് വളരെ കുറച്ച് കൃത്യത മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു[2]

ആബ്സല്യൂട്ട് താപനിലയുടെ ഏകകത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥമായി കെൽവിൻ എന്ന പേരാണ് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. താപനിലയുടെ താഴ്ന്ന നിരക്ക്(ആബ്സല്യൂട്ട് സീറോ) കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചത് ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ്. ലോർഡ് കെൽവിൻ സ്ഥിരീകരിച്ച -273.15 ഡിഗ്രീ സെൽഷ്യസ് (-459.67 ഫാരൻഹീറ്റ് ഡിഗ്രീ) കൃത്യമായി കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചത് ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ്.
1892ൽ തെർമ്മോഡൈനാമിക്സിൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ചു. ഐറിഷ് ഹോം റൂൾ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കെതിരായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹം[3][4][5] .ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ് ആദ്യത്തെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഹൗസ് ഓഫ് ലോർഡിൽ സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ. ഐറിഷിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയർന്ന പദവിയായ ബാരൺ കെൽവിൻ എന്ന പദവി ലഭിച്ച ആദ്യ വ്യക്തി. ഗ്ലാസ്ഗൗ സർവകലാശാലക്കടുത്ത് കൂടി പോകുന്ന കെൽവിൻ നദിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പദവിക്ക് ഈ പേര് ലഭിച്ചത്. ഏകദേശം 50 വർഷത്തോളം ഗ്ലാസ്ഗൗ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ നാച്ച്യുറൽ ഫിലോസഫിയിലെ അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. ഗ്ലാസ്ഗൗ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ഹുന്റേറിയൻ മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽ സ്ഥിരമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രചനകളുടെ എക്സിബിഷനുകൾ പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അവയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ, ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന മറ്റ് വസ്തുക്കൾ പുകക്കുഴൽ എന്നിവയും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
വ്യവസായ രംഗങ്ങളിൽ നിരവധി കണ്ടുപിടിത്തം നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള അദ്ദേഹം, അവയുടെ വളർച്ചക്കും വളരെയധികം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ധാരാളം കണ്ടുപിടിത്തങ്ങൾ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാമത്തിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അവയെ കെൽവിൻ എന്നാണ് സാധാരണ പറയാറ്

Baron Kelvin, of Largs in the County of Ayr, 1892.[8] The title derives from the River Kelvin, which runs by the grounds of the University of Glasgow. His title died with him, as he was survived by neither heirs nor close relations.

Lord Kelvin was commemorated on the £20 note issued by the Clydesdale Bank in 1971; in the current issue of banknotes, his image appears on the bank's £100 note. He is shown holding his adjustable compass and in the background is a map of the transatlantic cable.[13]
The town of Kelvin, Arizona, is named in his honour, as he was reputedly a large investor in the mining operations there.
In 2011 he was one of seven inaugural inductees to the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.[14]
