സ്ത്രീകളോടുള്ള അകാരണമായ ഭയത്തെയാണ് ഗൈനോഫോബിയ (Gynophobia / Gynephobia) എന്നുപറയുന്നത്.[1] ഒരു സാമൂഹിക സാഹചര്യത്തോടു തോന്നുന്ന ഭയം അഥവാ സ്പെസിഫിക് സോഷ്യൽ ഫോബിയ എന്ന ഗണത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു മാനസികാവസ്ഥയാണിത്. 'ഫെമിനോഫോബിയ'[2], 'കാലിഗൈനോഫോബിയ'[3], 'വെനുസ്റ്റാഫോബിയ'[4] എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ അവസ്ഥയെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുവാനായി മുമ്പ് 'ഹൊറർ ഫെമിനെ' എന്ന ലാറ്റിൻ പദവും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.[5]
സ്ത്രീകളെക്കുറിച്ച് യുക്തിഹീനവും മുൻവിധിയോടുകൂടിയതുമായ അഭിപ്രായം, വെറുപ്പ് എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള മാനസികാവസ്ഥയെ മിസോജിനി (Misogyny) എന്നുപറയുന്നു. ഗൈനോഫോബിയ ഇതിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യാസപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.[6][7] ഇവയിൽ നിന്നെല്ലാം വ്യത്യസ്തമായി സ്ത്രീകളോടു ബഹുമാനവും സ്നേഹവും തോന്നുന്ന അവസ്ഥയെ ഫിലോജിനി (Philogyny) എന്നുംപറയുന്നു.[8]
ഗ്രീക്ക് ഭാഷയിൽ 'സ്ത്രീ' എന്നർത്ഥമുള്ള ഗുനെ ( γυνή )[9] , 'ഭയം' എന്നർത്ഥമുള്ള ഫോബോസ് ( φόβος )[10] എന്നീ വാക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് 'ഗൈനോഫോബിയ' എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിൽ സ്വവർഗലൈംഗികതയിലേക്കുള്ള ചുവടുവയ്പ്പായാണ് ഗൈനോഫോബിയയെ കണക്കാക്കിയിരുന്നത്. ഈ വിഷയത്തെപ്പറ്റി ധാരാളം പുസ്തകങ്ങളും ഇറങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് സ്ത്രീകളോടുണ്ടാകുന്ന അപരിചതത്വം, ഏതെങ്കിലും സംഭവമോ സാഹചര്യമോ മൂലമുണ്ടാകുന്ന വിഭ്രാന്തി എന്നിവയാണ് ഗൈനോഫോബിയയിലേക്കു നയിക്കുന്നതെന്നാണ് ഡോക്ടർ ഹേവ്ലോക് എല്ലിസ് തന്റെ സ്റ്റഡീസ് ഓൺ ദ സൈക്കോളജി ഓഫ് സെക്സ് (1896) എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറയുന്നത്.[൧] [11]
പ്രശസ്ത മനഃശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും സിഗ്മണ്ട് ഫ്രോയ്ഡിന്റെ ശിഷ്യനുമായ വിൽഹെം സ്റ്റീക്കലിന്റെ ദ സൈക്കോളജി ഓഫ് ഹെയ്റ്റ്റെഡ് ആൻഡ് ക്രുവൽറ്റി എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഒരു മാസകിസ്റ്റിന്റെ ഗൈനോഫോബിയയെക്കുറിച്ച് പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നു. പീഡനം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതിൽ ആഹ്ളാദിക്കുന്നവരെയാണ് മാസകിസ്റ്റ് (Masochist) എന്നുപറയുന്നത്.
സൈക്കോ അനലിസ്റ്റായ കാരൻ ഹോർണി രചിച്ച ദ ഡ്രെഡ് ഓഫ് വുമൺ (1932) എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഒരു ആൺകുട്ടിക്ക് സ്ത്രീകളോടു തോന്നുന്ന അസാധരണ ഭയത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നുണ്ട്.[12]
മറ്റു സോഷ്യൽ ഫോബിയകളുടെ ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണ് ഗൈനോഫോബിയയ്ക്കുമുള്ളത്. അമിതമായി വിയർക്കുക, വിറയ്ക്കുക, ശ്വാസതടസ്സം, അസ്വസ്ഥത, സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോൾ വാക്കുകൾ മുറിഞ്ഞുപോവുക, നെഞ്ചിലും തൊണ്ടയിലും ഭാരം ഇരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ തോന്നുക. വേഗത്തിലുള്ള ഹൃദയസ്പന്ദനം, ഓക്കാനം, ഓടി രക്ഷപ്പെടാനുള്ള പ്രവണത എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ.
൧ ^ അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ് "'It is, perhaps, not difficult to account for the horror – much stronger than that normally felt toward a person of the same sex – with which the invert often regards the sexual organs of persons of the opposite sex. It cannot be said that the sexual organs of either sex under the influence of sexual excitement are esthetically pleasing; they only become emotionally desirable through the parallel excitement of the beholder. When the absence of parallel excitement is accompanied in the beholder by the sense of unfamiliarity as in childhood, or by a neurotic hypersensitiveness, the conditions are present for the production of intense horror feminae or horror masculis, as the case may be. It is possible that, as Otto Rank argues in his interesting study, "Die Nacktheit in Sage und Dichtung," [sic] this horror of the sexual organs of the opposite sex, to some extent felt even by normal people, is embodied in the Melusine type of legend.'"[11]
