Идол (アイドル , aidoru, од англискиот збор „idol“) во јапонската поп култура е млада медиумска личност (пејач, глумец, модел итн), обично тинејџер, со сладок и невин имиџ.[1][2][3][4] Идоли се посебна категорија јапонски артисти.
Терминот се комерцијализира од јапонски агенции за таленти. Идолите се наменети да бидат идеален објект за љубовта на страсните обожаватели.[1][2][3][4][5]
Исто така, постои мислење дека Јапонците гледаат идолите како сестри или „обични соседски девојки“.[4]
Во јапонската поп-музика идоли претставуваат специфичен жанр, вид едноставни сентиментални песни, кои не изискуваат многу вокално мајсторство, но пејач треба да биде убав и сладок. Во нивниот секојдневен живот, идолите исто така треба да одговараат на нивните песни, да имаат кристално чист и светол имиџ, да бидат пример за младата генерација.[1][2]
Феноменот се појавил во почетокот на 1970-тите години поради популарноста на францускиот филм „Cherchez l'Idole“ („Барајте идолот“), кој се појавил по екраните во Јапонија во ноември 1964 година. Глумицата Силви Вартан, која ја игра главната улога, станува исклучително популарна.[6] Терминот „идол“ почна да се користи за девојки, главно на возраст од 14 до 16 години, кои сега почнуваат својот пат кон славата или за многу млади нови ѕвезди.
