Ķīšezers ir liels ezers Rīgas pilsētas ziemeļaustrumu daļā. Rīgas administratīvajā teritorijā iekļauts viss ezers un tā piekrastes daļa.[1]

Senākais ezera nosaukums kopā ar Juglas ezeru bija Ropažu ezers,[2] vēlāk ezers saukts arī par Stintezeru (vācu: Stintsee jeb tiešā tulkojumā: Salaku ezers). Lielākā pieteka — Jugla. Agrāk pa Langu ezera ūdens iztecēja uz Gauju, bet Daugavgrīvas klostera mūki ap 1266. gadu uz toreizējās Dūņupes ierīkoja pirmās ūdensdzirnavas un izraka dzirnavu grāvi (Mühlgraben), pa kuru ezera ūdens sāka noplūst uz Daugavu. Vēlāk izveidotais kanāls ar tuvējo Daugavu vēl arvien tiek dēvēts par Mīlgrāvi.
Savukārt Ķīšezera dienvidu krasts piederēja Livonijas ordenim, kas 1297. gadā uz Bērzupītes jeb Bukultu strauta (tagad Juglas kanāls) iekārtoja savas ūdens dzirnavas un mūra pili, ko sāka saukt par Jaunajām dzirnavām (latīņu: Novum Molendinum, vācu: Neuermühlen) jeb Bukultu pili.
1868. gadā no Rīgas uz Ķīšezeru sāka kursēt kuģīši.[3] 19. gadsimta beigās — 20. gadsimta sākumā kādu no šiem kuģīšiem nodēvēja vācbaltiešu inženiera Ādolfa Agtes vārdā. Par pieturvietām tika izvēlētas tādas piestātnes kā Heila muiža, Strazdumuiža, Villa-Jahtklubs u.c.[4]
19. gadsimta beigās un 20. gadsimta sākumā, līdz ar Ķeizarmeža (tagadējā Mežaparka) attīstību, Ķīšezera krasta teritorija kļuva par iecienītu Jāņu zaļumballes vietu.[3]
1924. gadā Rīgas pilsētas teritorijā iekļāva Ķīšezera dienvidu un rietumu krastu, bet 1927. gadā austrumu krastu.
1944. gada 12. oktobra vakarā Ķīšezeru amfībijās šķērsoja Sarkanās armijas 374. un 376. strēlnieku divīzijas, un 285. mehanizētais speciālo uzdevumu bataljons, kas gan nesastapa nopietnu pretestību. Vienība uzsāka savu kustību no Jaunciema un izsēdās Mežaparkā.[5]
1960. gados pārveidots ezera dienvidu gals TEC-1 kūdras pelnu lauku izveidei.
Ezerā atrodas Sniķera sala un vēl divas salas ar kopējo platību 8 ha. Krasti gan lēzeni (ziemeļu daļa), gan stāvi (Mežaparks, vietām ziemeļaustrumu krastā). Ja ir spēcīgs rietumu vējš, ezerā caur Mīlgrāvi ieplūst iesāļūdens no Rīgas līča. Ezerā novērotas vairāk nekā 30 zivju sugas, starp tām retās kaze, ausleja, dūņu pīkste.[6]
Austrumu krastā Bulduru pilskalns. Rietumu krastā Rīgas Zooloģiskais dārzs, Ozo Golfa klubs. 1999. gadā izveidots Jaunciema dabas liegums.
Ezera dienvidu galā (uz ziemeļiem no Pakalniešu ielas) padomju laikos iegūtas smiltis būvniecībai. Smilšu iegūšanas rezultātā netālu no krasta radušās dziļas bedres.
