Otrā pasaules kara laikā ielas apbūve tika daļēji iznīcināta, mūsdienās to veido gan pirmskara, gan Latvijas PSR laikā celtas ēkas.
Dobeles iela ir savienota ar šādām ielām:
Iela Jelgavas kartēs atrodama jau kopš 17. gadsimta ar nosaukumiem Mīlestības iela (vācu: Liebes Straße) un Ebreju iela. Tā veda no Reformātu baznīcas līdz pilsētas nocietinājumu Dobeles vārtiem, tādēļ 19. gadsimtā to pārdēvēja par Dobeles ielu (Doblensche Straße).
Pēc Jelgavas sagraušanas 1944. gadā Dobeles ielai pievienoja nelielu posmu aiz agrākās Lielās (tagad Vecpilsētas) ielas krustojuma un 1965. gada 14. jūnijā pārdēvēja par Revolūcijas ielu. Latvijas neatkarības atjaunošanas laikā 1990. gada 26. aprīlī tai atjaunoja Dobeles ielas nosaukumu.[1]
