Rakstos pirmoreiz minēta 1269. gadā. Ilgus gadsimtus pilsēta atradās Hābsburgu impērijas sastāvā, tās vāciskais nosaukums bija Šternberga (vācu: Sternberg). No 1918. gada — Čehoslovākijas sastāvā. No 1938. līdz 1945. gadam kā Sudetu apgabala daļa atradās Vācijā. Pēc Otrā pasaules kara — atkal Čehoslovākijā. Pamatojoties uz Beneša dekrētiem, pilsētas vācu iedzīvotāji tika padzīti. Kopš 1993. gada — Čehijas sastāvā.
Šternberka ir hokejista Davida Krejči (David Krejčí, 1986), futbolista Davida Rozehnala (David Rozehnal, 1980) un hokejista Petra Vrānas (Petr Vrána, 1985) dzimtā pilsēta.
