Tadžmahālu savas mirušās sievas Mumtāzas Mahālas mūžīgai piemiņai sērojot uzbūvēja mogolu imperators Šahs Džahāns. Viņa sieva nomira 1631. gadā dzemdību laikā. Šahs Džahāns apprecējās ar Mumtāzu Mahālu 1612. gadā. Tadžmahāla celtniecība sākās ap 1632. gadu. Pie celtniecības darbiem strādāja vairāk nekā 20 tūkstoši strādnieku[1] no Indijas, Persijas, Osmaņu impērijas un Eiropas, lai to pabeigtu ap 1638. vai 1639. gadu. Kompleksa papildinājumi tika pabeigti 1643. gadā, savukārt ārējie apdares darbi tika veikti līdz 1647. gadam. Pilnībā komplekss 17 hektāru lielā laukumā tika pabeigts 22 gados.[1]
Tadžmahāla kompleksu būvēja dažādi arhitekti, taču par galveno arhitektu uzskata persiešu cilmes indieti Ustadu Ahmadu Lahaurī (Ustad Aḥmad Lahawrī). Kompleksu veido pieci elementi — galvenie vārti, dārzs, mošeja, džavabs (tāda pati ēka kā mošeja otrpus mauzolejam) un pats mauzolejs ar četriem minaretiem.
