Rakstos pirmoreiz minēta 1560. gadā kā Lietuvas lielkņazistes apdzīvotā vieta. Apdzīvotā vieta pievienota Krievijas Impērijai pēc Polijas pirmās dalīšanas 1772. gadā. 1870. gadā Dobrušā tika nodibināta papīrfabrika. No 1935. gada - pilsēta. No 1941. gada augusta līdz 1943. gada 10. oktobrim atradās vācu okupācijā. 1986. gada 26. aprīlī notika Čornobiļas AES katastrofa un 60 % no Dobrušas rajona tika saindēti ar radioaktīvajām vielām.
