Gyvenvietė irokėzų žemėse įkurta 1769 m. Nuo XIX a. pradėta akmens anglių gavyba, Plimutą pasiekė geležinkelis, kėlėsi imigrantai (ypač lenkai, lietuviai, slovakai).
Lietuviai mieste apsigyveno XIX a. vid., 1890 m. jų būta virš 2000, o nuo XX a. pr. ėmė mažėti. Plimuto lietuvių dramos vaidilų draugija (įkurta 1896 m.) suvaidino pirmąjį JAV lietuvių spektaklį (Antano Truskio „Be sumnenės“). Veikė vakarinė suaugusiųjų mokykla (nuo 1887 m.), Šv. Kazimiero bažnyčia, ėjo laikraščiai „Vienybė lietuvninkų“ (1886–1907 m.), „Valtis“ (1894–1895 m.), „Tėvynė“ (1896–1900 m.), 1886–1897 m. Plimute išleistos 39 lietuviškos knygos.[1]
1884 m. įkurta bendra lietuvių–lenkų katalikų Dievo Motinos Gimimo parapija, pirmasis klebonas – W.Spryszynskis. Vėliau klebonavo kun. Antanas Varnagiris ir kun. Aleksandras Burba. Pastarasis ėmė burti lietuvius, tuo pačiu iššaukdamas trintį tarp abiejų tautų tikinčiųjų.[2] Tada kun.A.Burba įsteigė atskirą parapiją lietuviams ir jau 1890 m. spalio 27 d. mieste atidaryta JAV pirmoji tik lietuvių statyta Šv. Kazimiero bažnyčia.[3] 1895 m. pr. į atlaidus Plimute suvažiavo nemažai lietuvių kunigų: be Aleksandro Burbos dalyvavo Petras Abromaitis, Juozas Gricius, Jonas Kuras, Juozas Mašiotas, Mykolas Pėža, Mykolas Šedvydis, Juozas Zlatožinskas, Juozas Žebrys ir Jonas Žilius-Žilinskas. Jie nusprendė kurti lietuviškų mokyklų tinklą Pensilvanijos valstijoje. Mokytojomis turėjo dirbti vienuolės, todėl tąkart nuspręsta steigti ir lietuvių katalikių vienuolyną. Kunigų A.Burbos ir J.Zlatožinsko mirtys šiuos planus kiek sutrikdė, Šv. Kazimiero seserų kongregacija buvo įsteigta tik 1907 m.[4] Plimuto Šv.Kazimiero bažnyčioje nuo 1925 m. vargonininku dirbo žinomas pianistas ir chorvedys Petras Karašauskas – čia suorganizavo mišrųjį, mergaičių ir berniukų chorus bei orkestrą.
