Appellatio Vitaminum K designat plures substantias chemicas inter se cognatas et in lipidis solvendas, in primis phylloquinonum (vitaminum K1) quod in viridibus plantis invenitur. Alia pars tamen huius vitamini a bacteriis in intestinis nostris elaboratur (vitaminum K2) quoniam nostrum corpus id fabricare nequit. Vitaminum K ut cofactor sanguinis coagulationi necessarium est, unde nomen K e Germanico verbo Koagulation. Nam vitaminum K appendicem carboxylam acido glutamico proteinorum coagulationis appendere solet, sine qua illae proteinae recte operari non possunt. Itaque si vitamino K careas, in haemorrhagiae periculum incideris.
Anno 1943 propter vitaminum K inventum Henricus Dam et Eduardus Adelbertus Doisy Nobelianum Medicinae Praemium acceperunt.
