Tribunus militum erat praefectus in exercitu Romano. Non idem erat atque tribunus plebis aut tribunus militum consulari potestate. Cum Roma est nova, erat dux solus ex tribu singulo[1], sed in aetate Republicae legiones tribunos sexies habebant. Post reformationem Marii, anno 107 a.C.n., pars tribuni militum mutabat; nunc maiorem partem agebat in rebus politicis. Augusto principe, tribunus militum gradus habebat inter gradus centurionum et legatorum, et interdum tribuni militum ex centurionibus elegebant.
