Fratres sensu latiore sunt sodales viriles ordinis Christiani.
Multis in ordinibus fratres ii soli vocantur, qui non sunt presbyteri, cum clerici patres appellentur. Alii ordines (sicut ordines Franciscani et alii ordines mendicantes) id carissimum habent, ut omnes sodales (etiam presbyteri) se invicem fratres appellent.
Fratres (non presbyteri) in ordinibus monasticis usque ad Concilium Vaticanum Secundum conversi appellari solebant nec monachi perfecti habebantur.
Sodales Canonicorum Regularium interdum Domini appellantur.
