Cithara electrica[1] (-ae, f) est genus citharae quae, vibratione chordarum sensa et in flumen electricum mutata, sonum facit auxilio instrumenti amplificatorii citharae. Varietates structurae citharae electricae sunt, sed solitim habent nervos sex et cervix. Sunt multae species cithararum electricarum, nam celeberrimi sunt Stratocaster Fender et Les Paul Gibson. Cithara electrica inventa est anno 1931, a Georgio Beauchamp, general manager societatis mercatoriae National String Instrument Corporation, cum Paulo Barth, tum vice president societatis mercatoriae.[2]
