Cathaini[1] (Sinice; 契丹 ac pinyinice; Qìdān et Persice; ختن) inveniuntur in origine inter nomadicas gentes Mongoliae et Mandshuriae (Sinarum Boreoriente) e saeculo IV. Qui, per Dynastiam Liaonem in vasta Septemtrionali Sinarum area dominati sunt, quamquam paucas reliquias reliquere quae servatae sint usque ad praesens. Collapsa Dynastia Liaone anno 1125, multi Cathaini longius versus Occidentem migravere ubi condidere civitatem Cataiae Nigrae, denique destructae ab Imperio Mongolico anno 1218.
