Aegeus (Graece Αἰγεύς) rex Atheniensium erat. Filium suum Theseum, quem ex Aethra Pitthei filia genuerat, Minotaurum vincere misit et Theseus monstrum occidit. Navis, quae Theseum asportaverat in Cretam, instructa fuerat nigris velis. Sed pater Aegeus filio proficiscenti dixerat : "Memento, mi fili, vertere nigra vela in alba, si incolumis evaseris". At Theseus, juvenis victor, non meminit vela nigra mutare et alba vela navi non posuit, sicut cum Aegeo contractum erat, si viveret. Stabat autem in portu senex, exspectans navis reditum; et, eminus adspiciens nigrum velorum colorem, filium periisse credidit. Tum, dolore confectus, se praecipitatem dedit in mare, cui nomen Aegeo traditum est (Graece Αἰγαῖον Πέλαγος).
