Laodicea ad Lycum fuit urbs antiqua a rege Antiocho II circa 250 a.C.n. in Phrygia condita, prope flumen Lycum. Rex nomen uxoris suae novae urbi indidit (plures urbes Laodicea dictae in regno Seleucidarum fuerunt).
Postquam Romani et rex Pergamenus Attalus I Antiochum III apud Magnesiam ad Sypilum vicerunt, secundum pacem inter victores et victos Apameae anno 188 a.C.n. pactam, urbs Laodicea regno Pergameno Attalidarum attributa est. Postea, regno ab Attalo III Romanis anno 133 a.C.n. testamento legato, Laodicea urbs provinciae Asiae facta est. Plurimi nummi Laodiceae, sive tempore regni Pergameni sive sub imperatoribus Romanis, percussi usque ad nostrum tempus pervenerunt.
Imperatoribus Tiberio ac Nerone Laodicea terrae motibus bis vastata est. Incolae suis viribus tamen urbem restituere potuerunt. Divites enim erant : Laodicea nobilissima in imperio Romano erat vestium pulchritudinis causa, purpuratarum praecipue.
