Aëronautica (a verbis Graecis ὰήρ 'aer' et ναυτική (τέχνη) 'ars navigandi') est scientia adumbrandarum fabricandarumque machinarum volandi capacium atque ars gubernandarum aeronavium. Quae studia etiam ad operationes vehiculorum aëriorum et rochetarum pertinet. Societas Regia Aeronauticae Britannica agnoscit aspectus "Aaeronautical Art, Science and Engineering"(Aaeronauticalis Ars, Scientia et Machinaria) et "The profession of Aeronautics (Ille Professio Aeronautica-dictum quod Astronauticam comprehendit)."[1]

Dum terminus—ad verbum significans 'artem nautarum aeriarum'— attigisset primum solum ad scientiam gubernationis aeronavis, adhunc extensus est ut comprehendit tecnicas rationes et aspectos aeronavigari. Verbum "aviatio" (navigatio aerea) adhibetur pro aeronautica sed aëronautica comprehendit vehiculum aerium leviore aere, sicut navis aeria sed aviatio non id comprehendit.[2] Aeronauticae potissima pars ad aerodynamica dedicatur.
