카르만선

카르만 선(Kármán line) 또는 폰 카르만 선 (von Karman line)은 지구의 대기권과 우주 공간 사이의 경계를 정의하려는 시도로 항공학에 대한 국제적인 기록 유지 기구인 국제항공연맹(FAI, Fédération aéronautique Internationale)에서 특정한 정의를 제공하고 있다. 항공기와 우주선은 다른 관할권에 속하며 서로 다른 조약의 적용을 받기 때문에 공간의 경계를 정의하는 것은 법적 및 규제의 목적에서 중요하다. 국제법에서는 우주공간의 경계 또는 국내 영공의 한계를 정의하고 있지 않다.[1][2]

국제항공연맹(AI에)서는 카르만 선을 지구 평균 해수면의 100 킬로미터 (54 nmi; 62 mi; 330,000 ft) 상공에서 시작하는 공간으로 정의한다. 전문가들 사이에서 대기가 끝나고 우주가 시작되는 정확한 위치에 대한 합의는 없지만 대부분의 규제 기관(UN 포함)에서는 카르만 선에 대하여 FAI의 정의 또는 이와 유사한 정의를 채택하고 있다.[3] FAI에서 정의한 카르만 라인은 1960년대에 정립되었다.[4] 다양한 국가와 단체는 다양한 목적에 따라 우주공간의 경계를 다르게 정의하고 있다.[5][1][6]
카르만 선은 항공공학 및 우주 비행학 분야에서 활발히 활동한 헝가리계 미국인 엔지니어이자 물리학자인 테오도르 폰 카르만(Theodore von Kármán) (1881–1963)의 이름을 따서 명명되었다. 1957년, 그는 이러한 고도의 경계를 유도하려고 시도한 최초의 사람이다.
