비디오 게임 콘솔(video game console)은 TV나 모니터와 같은 디스플레이 장치의 컴포지트 비디오, 고선명 멀티미디어 인터페이스 등의 영상 디스플레이 신호를 이용하여 1인 이상이 게임을 플레이할 수 있는 컴퓨터 장치(computer device)를 말한다. 소비자들이 혼자서 비디오 게임을 즐길 수 있는 개인용 컴퓨터는 여러 기능을 함께 다루고 있으므로 게임기라고 부르지 않는다.

The third generation of video game consoles began with both Sega and Nintendo releasing SG-1000 and Nintendo Entertainment System (known in Japan as the Family Computer), respectively, on July 15, 1983 in Japan.[5] This generation came to an end when Nintendo discontinued the Nintendo Entertainment System on September 25, 2003 in Japan.[6]
The seventh generation of video game consoles began when 마이크로소프트 released the 엑스박스 360 on November 22, 2005,[13] several months before Sony Computer Entertainment's release of the PlayStation 3 on November 17, 2006.[14] The first console of this generation to be discontinued was the 엑스박스 360 on April 20, 2016,[15] then the second console of this generation to be discontinued was the PlayStation 3 on May 29, 2017[16] and while Wii still remain in production. Potentaially, the seventh generation is partially still ongoing under temporary surpport.
The eighth generation of video game consoles began when Nintendo released the Wii U on November 18, 2012.[17] This is the current generation of video game consoles. The first console of this generation to be discontinued is the Wii U, on January 31, 2017;[18] the other major consoles from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony remain in production.
