Professor Konishi has made important contributions to the theory of coalition and group formation, and he has also worked on its applications to various fields of economics, including public economics, urban economics, and market design. In the theory of coalition formation, the 2003 Journal of Economic Theory paper (with D. Ray) proposed an innovative dynamic approach to describing the process of coalition formation when agreements are only temporarily binding. The 1996 Journal of Economic Theory paper provided a general analytical framework and a foundation in the theory of local public goods. The 2008 Regional Science and Urban Economics paper scrutinized the conditions under which the well-known Tiebout hypothesis is supportable. In urban economics, the 2000 Journal of Urban Economics paper introduced a new theory of population agglomeration. In the field of market design, the 2006 Journal of Economic Theory paper (with U. Unver) examined why the British medical intern matching mechanism has been successful, despite the fact that it violates coalitional stability. The list of his contributions shows that Professor Konishi has an exceptional talent for providing deep theoretical insights that address a wide range of important economic issues in reality. — 「受賞理由」 日本経済学会・2009年度中原賞受賞者
