Prendere Roma per toma o capire Roma per toma (dal piemontese capì Roma për toma) è un proverbio popolare piemontese[1] che significa confondere una cosa per un'altra o, per estensione, non capire nulla o essere tardi di mente.[2]
Benché l'etimologia della parola "toma" sia incerta,[3] si pensa che essa sia legata al proverbio "capire Roma per toma", correlato al modo di dire "promettere Roma e toma" (dal latino promittere Romam et omnia, ovvero "promettere Roma e tutto il resto"), che significa fare promesse impossibili da mantenere.[2]
Nella lingua italiana esistono molti termini con il medesimo significato, fra cui prendere fischi per fiaschi e prendere lucciole per lanterne. In Piemonte viene inoltre usato il modo di dire capì ciòca per bròca ("confondere una campana con un chiodo").[4]
