Garis Suksesi untuk Takhta Swedia ditentukan oleh Undang-Undang Suksesi (bahasa Swedia:Successionsordningen), awalnya disetujui bersama oleh Parlemen di Örebro oleh Raja Charles XIII pada 1810.[1][2]
Pada tahun 1979, Parlemen memperkenalkan anak sulung mutlak yang berarti anak sulung Raja, terlepas dari jenis kelamin adalah yang pertama di garis suksesi. Perubahan mulai berlaku pada 1 Januari 1980 yang membuat negara Swedia mengadopsi anak sulung mutlak.
Mahkota Swedia sebelumnya (sejak 1810) turun sebagai anak sulung agnatic yang berarti hanya laki-laki yang mewarisi takhta.[butuh rujukan]
Sesuai dengan UU Suksesi, keturunan Carl XVI Gustaf dari Swedia yang beragama Lutheran dan dibesarkan di Swedia yang berhak naik takhta. Seseorang kehilangan hak suksesi dan menghilangkan hak suksesi keturunan mereka jika ia:
