Menurut penelitian oleh David E. Mungello, dari 1552 (pasca kematian St. Fransiskus Xaverius) sampai 1800, terdapat 920 Yesuit yang berpartisipasi dalam misi Tiongkok; 314 orang diantaranya adalah orang Portugis, dan 130 orang lainnya adalah orang Prancis.[2]
