Academy Award untuk Skenario Adaptasi Terbaik adalah penghargaan Academy Award untuk skenario film terbaik yang diadaptasi dari materi yang sudah ada sebelumnya. Penghargaan ini diberikan kepada penulis skenario yang menulis adaptasi untuk film tersebut. Media yang paling sering diadaptasi adalah novel. Format lainnya mencakup naskah drama, musikal, cerita pendek, serial TV, film ataupun karakter dari media hiburan lainnya. Semua sekuel juga dianggap adaptasi menurut standar ini, karena didasarkan pada cerita dan karakter film asli.

Sebelum namanya saat ini, penghargaan ini dikenal sebagai Academy Award untuk Skenario Terbaik Berdasarkan Materi dari Media Lain.[1][2] Kategori Skenario Adaptasi Terbaik telah menjadi bagian dari Academy Awards sejak awal.
Saat ini, penghargaan ini merupakan bagian dari dua penghargaan skenario yang dianugerahkan di Academy Award. Yang lainnya adalah penghargaan Academy Award untuk Skenario Asli Terbaik, untuk skenario yang tidak berdasarkan pada materi yang diterbitkan sebelumnya.
Cabang Penulis dari Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences menentukan apakah skenario film diadaptasi atau asli berdasarkan sumber materi, wawancara yang diberikan tentang film, materi publisitas film, dan terkadang menempatkan skenario film dalam kategori yang berbeda dari yang ditetapkan Serikat Penulis Amerika Serikat.
Untuk Academy Awards ke-75, Gangs of New York dinominasikan dalam kategori Skenario Asli (meskipun film tersebut berdasarkan buku The Gangs of New York) karena para penulis skenario mengarang sebagian besar karakter dan alur cerita.[3] Untuk Academy Awards ke-89, Moonlight dikampanyekan sebagai skenario asli. Namun karena didasarkan pada naskah drama yang tidak diterbitkan, akhirnya ditempatkan dalam kategori Skenario Adaptasi.[4]
Orang pertama yang menang dua kali dalam kategori ini adalah Joseph L. Mankiewicz, yang memenangkan penghargaan tersebut dalam dua tahun berturut-turut, 1949 dan 1950. Yang lain yang menang dua kali dalam kategori ini termasuk George Seaton, Robert Bolt (yang juga menang di tahun berturut-turut), Francis Ford Coppola, Mario Puzo, Alvin Sargent, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Michael Wilson, Alexander Payne dan Christopher Hampton. Payne memenangkan kedua penghargaan tersebut sebagai bagian dari tim penulis, dengan Jim Taylor untuk Sideways dan Jim Rash dan Nat Faxon untuk The Descendants. Sarah Y.
