English naam Vienna, official German naam Wien, aur ii city ke naam aur dher bhasa me, Celtic sabd "windu" se aais hae, jiske matlab bright nai to fair hae. Kuchh log ii soche hae ki ii naam Vedunia se aae hae, jiske matlab "forest stream," hae jon ki baad me Venia, Wienne aur Wien banaa. Others claim that the name comes from the Roman settlement Vindobona, probably meaning "white base/bottom," which became Vindovina, Vídeň (Czech) and Wien.[2]
The name of the city in Hungarian (Bécs), Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (Beč) and Ottoman Turkish (Beç) appears to have a different, Slavonic origin, and originally referred to an Avar fort in the area.[3] In Slovene, the city is called Dunaj, which in other Slavic languages means the Danube River, on which it is located.
