સુરીનામ

સૂરીનામ કે ડચ ગિયાના એ દક્ષિણ અમેરિકામાં આવેલો એક દેશ છે. તેનું સત્તાવાર નામ સુરીનામનું પ્રજાસત્તાક એવું છે. પહેલાં તે નેધરલેન્ડસ્ ગિયાના કે ડચ ગિયાના નામે જણીતું હતું. તે ગિયાના અને ફ્રેન્ચ ગિયાના વચ્ચે આવેલું છે. પારામારિબો તેની રાજધાની છે. તેની વસતી લગભગ ૫ લાખ જેટલી છે. તે ઈ. સ. ૧૯૭૫માં નેધરલેન્ડથી સ્વતંત્ર થયું.

આ દેશની દક્ષિણે આવેલ ક્ષેત્રો માટે તેને ગિયાના અને ફ્રેન્ચ ગિયાના સાથે વિવાદ છે.

આ દેશનું અર્થતંત્ર મુખ્યત્વે બોક્સાઈટની ખાણો અને શુદ્ધીકરણ પર ટકેલું છે. આ ઉદ્યોગ તેના જી.ડી.પી.ના ૧૫% છે અને તેની નિકાસના ૭૦% જેટલો છે. અન્ય નિકાસ ખાંડ, ક્રૂડ તેલ અને સોનાની થાય છે. કુલ કામ કરનારી વસતીના ૨૫% ખેતીમાં છે. તેના મુખ્ય વ્યાપારી ભાગીદાર છે નેધરલેંડ્સ, યુ.એસ.એ. અને કેરેબિયન દેશો. આ દેશની શોધ ૧૬મી સદીમાં વલંદા, ફ્રેન્ચ, સ્પેનીશ અને અંગ્રેજ વહાણવટુઓએ કરી. તેની એક સદી પછી નદી કિનારે ફળદ્રુપ જમીન પર વલંદા અને અંગ્રેજ ખેતી વસાહતો સ્થપાઈ. અંગ્રેજોએ ન્યૂ એમ્સ્ટરડેમ(ન્યુ યોર્ક)ના સાટે તેની વસાહતો આપી હતી.
