Na costa dunha pequena localidade turística do leste dos Estados Unidos, un enorme tiburón ataca varias persoas. Temendo as fatais consecuencias que isto pode provocar no negocio turístico, o alcalde négase a pechar as praias e a difundir a nova. Pero un novo ataque do escualo, na propia praia, acaba coa vida doutro bañista. O terror fíxose público, así que un veterano cazador de quenllas, un científico e o xefe da policía local se unen para dar caza ó temible animal.
