A National Basketball League (NBL), foi unha liga profesional de baloncesto masculino creada en 1937 nos Estados Unidos. En 1949, fusionouse coa Basketball Association of America (BAA) para formar a National Basketball Association (NBA).

A NBL comezou con 30 equipos independentes en 1937. A liga comezou coma Midwest Basketball Conference en 1935, pero cambiou o seu nome en 1937 nun intento de atraer máis público. Foi creada por tres corporacións: General Electric, Firestone e Goodyear. A NBL durou doce anos antes de fusionarse coa Basketball Association of America en 1949, dando coma resultado a National Basketball Association.
A liga comezou de maneira informal. Cada equipo xogaba dez partidos, dos cales catro eran xogados fóra da casa. Os partidos podían consistir en catro cuartos de dez minutos ou en tres períodos de quince minutos. A elección a tiña o equipo que xogaba na casa. Algúns dos equipos eran independentes, mentres que outros estaban dirixidos por compañías que tamén lles daban traballo ós xogadores.
A historia da NBL divídese en tres etapas, que contribuíron significativamente ó crecemento do baloncesto profesional e da NBA. A primeira dinastía foi dos Oshkosh All-Stars. A segunda etapa viu o crecemento dos Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, quen foron un equipo clave para a supervivencia da NBA nos seus primeiros anos. O período final céntrase ó redor da figura de George Mikan e na importancia dos homes altos no baloncesto.[1]
