Marutea é un atol situado ao sur das Tuamotu, a 1.400 km ao sueste de Tahití. Chámase coa orientación sur para distinguilo de Marutea Norte, tamén nas Tuamotu na comuna de Makemo. Administrativamente depende da comuna de Gambier.

A superficie total é de 14 km ², cunha lagoa de 112 km². Esta deshabitado e é visitado ocasionalmente por pescadores de perlas. En 1984 foi comprado por Robert Wan, o principal comerciante de perlas negras das Tuamotu. En 1993 construíu un aeródromo privado.
Foi descuberto por Pedro Fernández de Quirós, o 4 de febreiro de 1606, e chamouno «San Telmo», «San Blas» ou «Corral de Agua». Explorado por Edward Edwards, no 1791 mentres buscaba aos amotinados do Bounty, chamouno Lord Hood.
