Bhola Island (tamén chamada Dakhin Shahbazpur) é a illa máis grande de Bangladesh cunha superficie de 1441 km². É a maior parte da superficie de terra do distrito de Bhola na División de Barisal.[1]

Sitúase na boca do río Meghna. Hai servizos de transbordador que enlazan con Dacca e Barisal.[2]
A illa é longa e ten unha poboación de 1´7 millóns de habitantes. Un mapa de 1776 indica que tiña forma de óvalo; con todo, actualmente é máis alargada debido á erosión do río Meghna. Ten só 1´80 m. por enriba do nivel do mar no seu punto máis elevado.[3]
A illa de Bhola é coñecida pola súa callada de búfalo (doi), que é única en Bangladesh. O proceso utilizado non cambiou. Faise en macetas tradicionais de arxila e o proceso leva 18 horas. É popular na illa e sérvese en ocasións especiais tales como vodas, festivais e outras ocasións especiais.[4]
A illa enfrontouse con problemas crónicos de enerxía, aínda que se atopou gas natural en Shahbazpur en 1994. O goberno decidiu construír unha planta de enerxía que se espera que estea en pleno funcionamento en agosto de 2015. A estatal Power Grid Company de Bangladesh (PGCB ) está instalando unha liña de transmisión de alta tensión desde a illa de Bhola á illa Borhanuddin.[5]
En 1970 foi afectado por un devastador ciclón que devastou completamente a metade sur da illa e tamén destruíu a colleita de arroz.
En 1995, a metade da illa inundouse, deixando a 500.000 persoas sen fogar.[6]
En 2005, as inundacións afectaron a máis de medio millón de persoas na illa. As inundacións significativas nos meses e os anos anteriores causaran a erosión severa e provocaron que unha serie de ríos desbordáranse. Desde 2009 unha moitos habitantes da illa viven nos barrios pobres de Dhaka.[7]
