O Cho Oiu é a sexta montaña máis alta da Terra con 8.201 m.s.n.m. Està situada na cadea do Himalaia, a uns 20 km ao oeste do Everest, na fronteira entre Nepal e o territorio do Tíbet.

Cho Oiu significa deusa turquesa en tibetano.
O Cho Oiu foi escalado até a cima por primeira vez, seguindo a ruta da súa cara oeste, o 19 de outubro de 1954 polos montañeiros Herbert Tichy, Joseph Joechler e o xerpa Pasang Dawa Lama, formando parte dunha expedición austríaca.
A poucos quilómetros a poñente do Cho Oiu está localizado Nangpa La (5.716 m), un paso xeado que se utiliza na vía comercial entre o Tíbet e a zona nepalesa de Khumbu. A causa da súa proximidade ao Cho Oiu, os escaladores coidaron que o Cho Oiu era o "oitomil" máis fácil de ascender.
O Cho Oiu foi o quinto cume de máis de oito mil metros de altura que foi coroado polo ser humano, logo do Annapurna (xuño de 1950), Everest (maio de 1953), Nanga Parbat (xullo de 1953) e o K2 (xullo de 1954).
