Un capo (do italiano capo tasto, de capo, "cabeza" e tasto, "traste") é un dispositivo empregado para acorta-las cordas e, polo tanto, subir o ton de instrumentos de corda tales como a guitarra, o banjo ou a mandolina. O termo foi empregado por vez primeira por G.B. Doni nas súas Annotazioni de 1640, aínda que probablemente o uso do capo comezou algo antes, no século XVII.

Os capos empréganse para cambia-la clave e o ton das cordas tocadas ó ar nunha guitarra sen necesidade de afinala de xeito distinto. O ton das cordas pulsadas non resulta modificado, tan só as cordas ó ar.
Hai diferentes tipos de capo no mercado que empregan distintos tipos de mecanismos, pero a maioría usa unha barra de goma para aperta-las cordas, fixada firmemente mediante un fío elástico ou de nailon; ou ben unha bisagra metálica ou outro dispositivo. O capo ten que se situar tan preto do traste coma sexa posible para un mellor resultado, incluso algúns expertos recomendan situalos capos con bisagra directamente sobre o traste, e non tras el.
A versión caseira máis sinxela pódese construír cun lapis e unha goma elástica. O lapis (preferiblemente con bordos planos para un mellor resultado) sitúase no traste á altura desexada fíxase coa goma elástica ó mastro.
No caso das guitarras de doce cordas é preciso emprega-lo capo para tocar de acordo coa afinación dunha guitarra de seis cordas, xa que os fabricantes recomendan non afina-lo instrumento máis aló dun ton por debaixo das guitarras convencionais, a fin de reduci-la tensión á que se ve sometido o mastro. Non obstante, algunhas guitarras modernas de doce cordas poden ser afinadas deste xeito directamente empregando cordas moi lixeiras en tensión. Aínda así, moitos guitarristas prefiren seguir a emprega-lo método tradicional do capo cando han de interpretar xunto a guitarras ou baixos de seis cordas.
Emprega-lo capo evita ter que aprender unha peza en diferentes claves cando se acompaña a cantantes con diferentes tons de voz. Debido ás distintas técnicas e voces de coro dispoñibles en diferentes claves, a mesma peza pode soar moi diferente se é tocada en Re ou en Do co capo no segundo traste. Adicionalmente, o timbre das cordas dunha guitarra cambia cando se reduce a lonxitude da escala, lembrando outros instrumentos coma a mandolina. Así pois, o uso do capo é un asunto tanto de expresión artística coma de experiencia técnica.
Respecto á guitarra, algúns estilos coma o flamenco e a música folk americana e británica fan uso moi frecuente do capo, mentres que noutros estilos coma a guitarra clásica ou o jazz apenas se emprega.
