As proteínas intrínsecas maiores/acuaporinas son unha familia de canles de membrana selectivas para a auga. A acuaporina 9 ten unha maior semellanza de secuencia coa AQP3 e a AQP7 e en conxunto poden formar unha subfamilia. A acuaporina 9 permite o paso dunha ampla variedade de solutos non cargados. A AQP9 estimula o transporte de urea e a permeabilidade osmótica para a auga. Existen informes contraditorios sobre o seu papel en proporcionar permeabilidade ao glicerol. A acuaporina 9 pode tamén ter algún papel nas funcións especializadas dos leucocitos, tales como a resposta inmunolóxica e a actividade bactericida.[1]
