Is móitíf ársa í triscéil nó tríchosóg, agus ann tríbís le siméadracht rothlach. Tá an dearadh bunaithe ar bís Airciméidéach, é sin nó trí chos daonna. Feictear í ar dhéantáin den Aois Neoiliteach agus Cré-umhaois suas go dtí an Iarannaois, go háirithe i gcultúr La Tène agus nósanna gaolmhara na gCeilteach.
As Gréigis, ciallaíonn τρισκελής (triskelḗs) "trí-chosach".[1] Feictear an triskeles de thrí chos daonna go háirithe sa Sean-Ghréig, i dtosach ar earraí potaireachta ársa, níos deireanaí ar bhoinn den ré chlasaiceach.
Sa Ré Heilléanaíoch, bhíodh siombal triscéile ag an ríocht ar Oileán with leis an na Sicile, le feiceáil ar bhoinn déanta ag Dionysius I Sioracús ag tosú timpeall na bliana 382 RC.[2] Níos deireanaí, feictear in araltas í, ar bhratacha na Sicile agus Oileán Mhanann (ny tree cassyn "na trí cosa" nó tríchosóg).[3]
Cé gur aidiacht ársa í τρισκελής, úsáideadh an téarma le haghaidh an tsiombail sin chéad uair sa bhliain 1835 ag Honoré Théodoric d'Albert de Luynes as Francis mar triskèle.[4]
