Il dirigea pendant quelque temps le théâtre de Haymarket en même temps qu'il y jouait comme acteur, et se fit remarquer par la licence avec laquelle il attaquait dans ses rôles les personnages contemporains les plus distingués; on fut forcé plusieurs fois de lui interdire la scène.
Il réussissait surtout dans la farce et la satire. Ses œuvres se composent de vingt pièces, qui brillent plutôt par l'esprit et la gaieté que par le plan.
On n'a guère conservé au théâtre qu'une seule de ses pièces, The Mayor of Garratt. Elles ont été réunies à Londres en 1778, 4 volumes in-8.
