Cette espèce a été décrite sous le protonyme Aranea plumipes par Latreille en 1804. Elle est placée dans le genre Nephila puis dans le genre Trichonephila par Kuntner et al. en 2019.
Nephila cunninghamii[4], Nephila venosa[5], Nephila flagellans[6], Nephila nigritarsis[6], Nephila victorialis[6], Nephila labillardierii[7], Nephila insularis[8], Nephila fletcheri[9], Nephila edwardsii[9], Nephila ventricosa[9] et Nephila ornata[10] ont été placées en synonymie par Dahl en 1912[11].
