Noin viisi miljoonaa vuotta sitten ne alkoivat vähitellen jäädä modernien norsujen syrjäyttämiksi. Kahdesta viimeisestä eteläamerikkalaista suvusta Cuvieronius kuoli sukupuuttoon vasta suunnilleen 9000 vuotta sitten.[3]Stegomastodonin 6000 vuotta vanhoja jäänteitä on löydetty Magdalenan jokilaaksosta, Kolumbiasta.[4] Gomphotheerit selvisivät myös Meksikossa ja Keski-Amerikassa aina pleistoseenin lopulle.[5]
