Luostarin paikalla sijaitsi alun perin Babenberg-suvun linna, mutta Itävallan rajakreivi Leopold II luovutti alueen Lambachin benediktiiniläismunkeille vuonna 1089.[1]
Alkuperäinen luostarirakennus tuhoutui tulipalossa vuonna 1297.[2] Nykyinen luostari edustaa barokkityyliä ja on rakennettu vuosina 1702–1736.[1] Luostarista löytyy muun muassa kirkko, kirjasto, marmorisali ja luostarin historiaa esittelevä museo. Marmorisalin katon freskot esittävät muun muassa Herkulesta ottelemassa Manalan kolmipäistä koirahirviötä kerberosta vastaan.[2] Luostaria ympäröi puutarha, jossa on paviljonki.
Renessanssisäveltäjä Jacobus Gallus (1550–1591) asui jonkin aikaa luostarissa.
Nykyisin luostarissa asuu 30 munkkia, minkä lisäksi luostari toimii yli 900 lapsen kouluna.[2]
Luostari on erittäin suosittu matkailukohde, ja siellä vierailee vuosittain puoli miljoonaa turistia.[2]
