1970-luvulla Larkinista tuli jazz-pianon ammattilainen.
Saatuaan seisovat aplodit esittäessään scat-laulua kappaleessa "On the Sunny Side of the Street", hän otti laulamisen pysyvästi mukaan esityksiinsä.
Scatman Johnin toinen suuri hitti oli "Scatman's World". Vaikka myöhemmät levytykset eivät saaneet kahden ensimmäisen singlen veroista suosiota, syntyi eurodance-tyylisiä albumeita lopulta kolme kappaletta.
Larkin osasi laulaa jopa neljästä samanaikaisesta sävelestä syntyviä sointuja teknniikalla jonka hän omaksui hindujen kurkkulaulusta.[1]
Vuoden 1998 lopussa Larkinilla diagnosoitiin keuhkosyöpä, mutta hän jatkoi työtään musiikin parissa sairauden aiheuttamasta rasituksesta huolimatta. Seuraavan vuoden kesäkuussa ilmestyi hänen viimeinen levynsä, Take Your Time. Pian sen julkaisun jälkeen hän joutui tehohoitoon. Larkin vaikutti pysyvän positiivisena sairaudesta huolimatta ja sanoi elämänsä olleen "mitä parhain". Hän kuoli joulukuun alussa 57-vuotiaana kotonaan Los Angelesissa. Tuhkat siroteltiin mereen Malibu Beachilla.
