Zirkulazio termohalino

Zirkulazio termohalinoa (THC) eskala handiko ozeano-zirkulazioaren zatia da, azaleko ur beroak eta ur gezako fluxuek sortutako dentsitate globaleko gradienteek bultzatzen dute.[1][2] Termohalino hitzarekin tenperaturari eta gatz-edukiari egiten zaio erreferentzia, biak batera itsasoko uraren dentsitatea zehazten duten faktoreak. Haizeak bultzatutako azaleko itsaslasterrak (Golkoko itsaslasterra, esaterako) polora joaten dira Ozeano Atlantiko ekuatorialetik, bidean hozten dira eta, batzuetan, goi latitudeetan hondoratzen dira (Ipar Atlantikoko ur sakona osatzen dute). Ur dentso hori gero arro ozeanikoetara joaten da. Zatirik handiena Ozeano Australean igotzen den bitartean, ur zaharrenak (1.000 urte inguruko iragaite-denborarekin) Ipar Pazifikoan igotzen dira.[3][4] Beraz, ozeanoko arroen arteko nahasketa handia gertatzen da, haien arteko desberdintasunak murriztuz eta Lurreko ozeanoak sistema global bihurtuz. Zirkuitu horietako urak energia (bero moduan) eta masa (solido eta gas disolbatuak) garraiatzen ditu mundu osoan. Zirkulazioaren egoerak eragin handia du Lurreko kliman.
Zirkulazio termohalinoari batzuetan zinta garraiatzaile ozeanikoa, garraiatzaile ozeaniko handia edo zinta garraiatzaile globala deitzen zaio, Wallace Smith Broecker klimatologoak asmatua.[5][6]
