Japoniako santutegi zaharrenetakoa da. Ez da jakina noiz sortu zen baina dagoeneko VIII mendeko Kojiki liburuan aipatzen da.
1871 eta 1946 artean Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社) izendatu zuten, hots, lehen mailako santutegien taldean egon zen.
Tenpluak lau eraikin multzo ditu:
Japoniako beste santutegi zaharrenek bezala ez dauka kami bat gurtzeko eraikitako Honden eraikinik, izan ere bertan Kamisha mendia eta shinboku (神木) zuhaitz sakratua gurtzen baitira.
Sei urtean behin Suwa auintziraren ertzean Onbashira jaialdia ospatzen da, 1.200 urtetan zehar mantendu dena. Hilabeteak irauten ditu eta ekitaldi nagusia mendian zuhaitz tantaiak moztu, apaindu eta berriz altxatzean datza.
