Tantaal (sümbol Ta) on keemiline element järjekorranumbriga 73. Tantaal on haruldane kõva korrosioonikindel sinakashall siirdemetall, mida kasutatakse laialdaselt sulamites väikestes kontsentratsioonides.

Tantaal on nimetuse saanud Kreeka mütoloogia pahalase Tantaluse nime järgi. Tänu keemilisele inertsusele on see väärtuslik aine laboriseadmetes ja plaatina asendajana. Tantaali peetakse tehnoloogiakriitiliseks elemendiks selle põhilisel kasutusalal – tantaalkondensaatorites, mida kasutatakse mobiiltelefonide, arvutite jmt elektroonikaseadmete komponendina. Tantaal esineb looduses alati koos keemiliselt sarnase nioobiumiga tantaliidi, kolumbiidi ja koltani mineraaligruppides.[1]
Tantaal esineb looduses kahe isotoobina: stabiilne isotoop massiarvuga 181 ja radioaktiivne isotoop poolestusajaga 1200 miljardit aastat massiarvuga 180. Tantaali avastas 1802. aastal Anders Ekeberg Soomest ja Rootsist pärit mineraaliproovidest.[2][3] Aasta varem oli Charles Hatchett avastanud nioobiumi (varasema nimetusega kolumbium)[4] ning 1809. aastal võrdles selle oksiidi, kolumbiiti tihedusega 5,918 g/cm³, tantaaliga tihedusega 7,935 g/cm³. Ta mõistis, et need kaks oksiidi, vaatamata erinevale tihedusele, on identsed, ning nimetas neid ühiselt tantaaliks.
Tantaali tihedus normaaltingimustel on 16,65 g/cm³, sulamistemperatuur on 3290 K (3017 °C) ja aurustumistemperatuur 5731 K.
