Oignies asub 16 km Lensist kirdes, teede D46 ja D160 ristumiskoha ümbruses. Valda läbib Autoroute A1, piki metsa ja järvedega täidetud pargiala.
Oignies' linn näib olevat asustatud juba varakristlikul ajal. Siis oli see tuntud kui Ongniacume.
Mme De Clercqi lossi territooriumil avastas insener Mulot 7. juunil 1842 kivisöe olemasolu, mis oli piirkonna jaoks majanduslik kingitus, mis arendas seejärel välja tohutu kaevandustööstuse. See oli esimene kivisöeavastus selles piirkonnas.
Esimese maailmasõja ajal okupeerisid linna sakslased. Vahetult enne territooriumilt taandumist 1918. aasta oktoobris hävitasid nad linna ja söekaevandused.
Ajavahemikus 28. maist 1940 kuni 2. septembrini 1944 oli linn taas kord Natsi-Saksamaa vägede poolt okupeeritud. Vahetult pärast saabumist põletasid okupatsiooniväed 380 maja ja tapsid 80 tsiviilisikut kättemaksuks ägeda vastupanu eest, mida nad Patarei sillal kohtasid.
1919. aastal saabus Oignies'i Georges Clemenceau, kes annetas Croix de guerre. 1948. aastal saabus François Mitterrand'i saatel linna Vincent Auriol, kes annetas linnale taas kord risti. Ta avas 28. mail 1940 mahalastud 80 inimest meenutava mausoleumi ja kuulutas Oignies'i "Ville Martyre'iks" (märtrilinn).
21. detsembril 1990 tõsteti Oignies'i šahtist 9 üles viimane veok kivisütt. See palju tähelepanu saanud sündmus tähistas söekaevandamise lõppu kogu Põhja-Prantsusmaal.
