Areoloj estas karakterizaĵo de du parencaj plantfamilioj, la kaktacoj (Cactaceae) kaj la Didiereacoj (Didiereaceae) . Ili evoluis el kurtŝosoj kreskantaj el la foliaksoj. Dum la evolucio de la planto la folioj pli kaj pli reduktiĝis laŭ kvanto kaj grandeco por malgrandigi la forvaporiĝan surfacon. [1] . La folioj transformiĝis en dornoj por repeli la bestojn.
La kavaj areoloj de la didiereacoj formas verukecajn altaĵojn, el kiuj folioj kaj dornoj kreskas ĉirkaŭe. Oni povas vidi la devenon kiel kurtŝoso.
La areoloj de kaktoj estas rondaj ĝis ovalaj, rempuraĵoj, el kiu kreskas dornojn kaj ofte ankaŭ triĥomoj kaj haroj.
