First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 재 (Yale: cay). Considered to be from the same root with 잣 (jat, “castle, fortress”), because both of them use the same hanja 城 for the hun readings in the pre-modern times.[1]
