Particularly: “The NKD entry traces this to itibi + ko instead, which is reasonable considering the superficial similarities between the ichibi plant and the various things called ichigo over history.”

The kanji spelling is an orthographic borrowing from Middle Chinese 蓬虆 (buŋ liuɪ).

     於蓬蔂丘譽田陵下【蓬蔂、此云_二伊致寐姑_一】、逢_二騎赤駿者_一。

     At the foot of the imperial tomb of Homuta in Rubus hirsutus Hill (“Rubus hirsutus” here is read as i-chi-bi-ko), he encountered a rider with a noble red steed.
