Borrowed from English Hotchkiss, after the E. H. Hotchkiss Company of Norwalk, Connecticut, U.S., an early and prominent manufacturer of staplers.
Various Japanese sources[1][2][3][4] erroneously derive this from the surname of Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, inventor of a kind of machine gun. However, research by Jim Breen instead derives this from the surname of Eli Hubbell Hotchkiss.[5]
