From Byzantine Greek Φιλάγρης (Philágrēs, a male given name) + -ივა (-iva, surname-forming suffix) + -ათი (-ati, toponym-forming suffix). The dynasty name is recorded in a 15th century Ottoman register as Ottoman Turkish [script needed] (Filāġriva).[1]
