From *ösümlik (“plant”), from Proto-Turkic *ös- (“to grow”). Compare to *ičimlik "beverage" (see эсемлек (esemlek)).
This etymon appears to have emerged in a Central Asian written language (~Chagatai), from which it also spread, in written form, to adjacent Turkic languages.
Cognate with Kazakh өсімдік (ösımdık), Karakalpak өсимлик (oʻsimlik), Nogai оьсимлик (ösimlik), Kyrgyz өсүмдүк (ösümdük), Tatar үсемлек (üsemlek), Karachay-Balkar ёсюмлюк (ösümlük), Kumyk оьсюмлюк (ösümlük), Turkmen ösümlik, Uzbek oʻsimlik (“plant”).
